Excellent. Bowie & Rosie, fantastic story! Susan & Gresham two love stories. that have a connection. Rosie has a monster to deal with from being an alcoholic but she courageously fights the recovery battle. "Courage was walking into a den of horrors and by sheer will alone turning that into a chamber of the ordinary."two men challenge their wives to be much stronger people. This is a story of two women of great courage. Very well developed characters. The writing in this story is In depth and told in a very intriguing way. I can't remember reading any book that brought me so much pleasure. This is not the usual historical western romance. Rosie rescues Bowie from the hangman's noose by marrying him. She doesn't know that he is already married because he's fulfilling an obligation to his dead brother, but his wife eventually moves west and finds a man she falls in love with. Susan is as courageous as Rosie. Both Susan & Rosie learn that needing someone is not necessarily a weakness. Needing love, patience,encouragement , strength ,belief in the future. Wonderful ending.

This was a wonderful read. I loved Rosie and Bowie and Susan. I rooted for all three to get their happy ending. Rosie is gruff and tuff on the outside but a scared young girl on the inside. So many times authors use that kind of backstory as a throwaway and gloss over it. It becomes overused and treated so shabily. Well Osborne here takes the time for you to feel all the pain. Your heart breaks for each and every one of them for different reasons. And you smile when they do gain their triumps. It felt all too real to life and when a book can move you that way it's accomplished being a great story.

The patience in Bowie is so rare in a hero. Of course sometimes you want to smack them for not using common sense but in the end then we wouldn't have obstacles and inner turmoil to over come.

I needed another chapter at the end but then that's just because I probably wanted to keep reading.
At one point in this novel I was crying so hard that I could no longer see the page. It is heart wrenching and very emotional. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy and maybe even a finger of whiskey (so you can toast Rosie's accomplishments).
The novel is actually two stories in one. It is about two vastly different women who must each overcome hardships and trauma on the road to self-awareness and self-respect. One of the heroines is Rosie Mulvehey, who saves Bowie Stone from the hangman's noose by selecting him to be her husband. In exchange for his life, Bowie agrees to help Rosie plant and harvest her crop on a dusty Kansas farm. With Bowie's help, Rosie is able to face the demons of her past and overcome the hardships of the present. The second heroine is Susan Stone who, along with her young son, is abruptly evicted from her opulent Washington D.C. home. Without friends, family or money, Susan is forced to answer a want ad for a mail-order bride. She travels cross-country to Wyoming, only to be rejected by her waiting husband-to-be. She quickly learns that she must face the world head-on if she and her son are to survive.
I really enjoyed this novel it was well written, face paced and a real tearjerker. The only reason that I did not give it a "Five" is that I found the finale with Rosie and Bowie a little short.
A western romance with two heroines! Both stories portrayed the growing romance well. I don't think the emotional trauma of the characters would have been written the same way today, but for the time in which it was written it makes sense. Just don't go into this book expecting a modern romance set in a western time.
STORY BRIEF
Bowie was dishonorably discharged from the Cavalry because he refused to follow an order to kill Indian women and children. Then he shot someone in self defense, but the witnesses lied. He is going to be hanged. Kansas has a shortage of men and a strange law. A woman can save a condemned man if she agrees to marry him. Rosie inherited a farm and needs a man to help run it. She chooses Bowie who agrees to marry her and stay with her until one harvest is brought in.

Rosie's stepfather Frank beat her mother to death and then beat and raped Rosie. He accidentally died. Rosie is full of anger and hatred toward Frank. Her only revenge is to show that she can make the farm profitable when he couldn't. She gets drunk daily but is still able to work hard.

Bowie is married to Susan and has a child. Susan has been taken care of by maids and servants her entire life. She faints easily. She is in Washington D.C., staying with Bowie's father who believes she tricked Bowie into marrying her. The father dies and his will forces her to leave his home within a week with only $40 in her purse. The family attorney won't give her any money from Bowie's estate because there is no death certificate. Susan has nowhere to go. She sees an ad by Gresham who wants an educated woman as his wife. She travels with her son Nate to Wyoming to marry him. When she arrives he won't marry her because she lied to him. He didn't want someone with a child, and she has no cooking, cleaning, or wood-chopping skills.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
This is my fourth Maggie Osborne book. The subjects/topics may not be as pretty as those in many romance novels, but I like them. In two of these books she has more than one romance happening. I think some authors (doing only one romance per novel) have a hard time filling 300 pages so they add filler and ponderings. If there is not enough story for one romance, I'd prefer Maggie's style of two romances with no filler.

This kept my interest. I enjoyed the changes the characters went through. The relationship developments were well done. I was surprised with how things worked out with Susan, which I liked. There is some grieving and hardship, but I see that more as storytelling. It is not an overwhelming downer, but there is sadness. Don't expect humor.

I had a problem with Bowie's dishonesty. He marries Rosie to save his life, and he's honest enough to tell her he will only stay one season. But he was dishonest by not telling her he was already married. I think he should have told her this before Rosie started having feelings for him. She needed a hired hand, and she would not have thrown him out just because was a bigamist. But on the other hand it was a way to have conflict for a couple who fall in love but can't be together. I guess I'd prefer this over some of the contrivances too many other authors use, for example vague communication and inaccurate assumptions. You'll enjoy the story more if you can accept this dishonesty bump.
