This book is selling for $42 on Amazon? I looked it up to see if I could download a free Kindle copy. The price is incredible, and I might say, well worth it.
Hunter S Thompson tells The Strange and Terrible Saga of the original Hell's Angels. Ex-soldiers who returned from the second world war damaged and unable to live in normal society. They formed a motor-cycle club in the Bay Area in San Francisco and settled on life outside the wire. They produced a code of conduct, a uniform and an ethos for living. They have been emulated all over the world although I doubt if their followers have ever read the book - because it's not what people might think.
Hunter does an outstanding job of getting inside the mind of the Angel and in the end takes a severe beating from the Angels when they turn on him. Their mantra of 'all-on-one' meant that once one Angel started to hit him all the others were obliged to join in.
The scene where he goes to a hidden apartment to get some downtime and later that night hears the faint roar of motorbikes and realises that they know where he is, is excellent.
A story of time gone by, as fascinating as any story about gladiators.
